starfish and shellsGranny and Rosie were looking for something to do. “I wish the sun would shine so we could go to the seaside,” Rosie said, looking out of the window at the pouring rain.
Granny laughed. “Yes,” she said. “I remember the last time we went. You used shells to write your name in big letters. Grandad was so proud of you, he went and bought you an ice-cream.” “Mmm,” Rosie said, licking her lips. She looked out of the window again hopefully, but it was still raining.
Then Granny had an idea. “I know!” she said. “Maybe there is a way we can be at the seaside—and we won’t even have to get in the car!” Rosie was puzzled, especially when Granny started messing around in her cupboards.
First Granny found an old pair of yellow curtains. “Hmmm, these curtains will be the sandy beach,” Granny said smiling.
Next came a blue bedsheet, followed by Rosie’s red bucket with the starfish on it, and a little blue spade. Lastly, Granny found a large tub of seashells that Rosie had collected some time ago and placed it beside the other things. “Now,” Granny said. “When I was a little girl, we used to play a game called Let´s pretend and that’s what we are going to play now. We are going to pretend we are at the seaside.”Rosie was starting to get the idea and jumped on to the sheet.
Look out, Granny, or I´ll splash you!” she laughed. Then Rosie picked up her spade and pretended to dig. “I’ll make you a sandcastle, Granny!” she said cheerfully. “Thank you, Granny; I wonder what you will think of next time it rains!”
